Denver Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau

On Sunday with temperatures easily hitting 100 degrees in Denver, a friend and I decided to catch the Rockies play the San Diego Padres at Coors Field. Our seats were on the 3rd base side so we avoided the blazing sun for most of the day.

Jason Jennings was pitching for the Rockies. I remember the first game Jason pitched back in 2001 against the NY Mets. He pitched a 1 hitter and hit a home run. Jason gets his fair share of ground ball outs. Sometimes it’s a good thing because he doesn’t give up a lot of home runs and sometimes it’s a bad thing because Clint Barmes and Garret Atkins are sub par defenders. Note: Barmes has 12 errors. Atkins has 15 errors. Their total (27) is actually the same amount as Derek Jeter (9) and Alex Rodriquez (18).

During the game, Jason induced several ground ball outs. However, a couple of times, the umpire called the batter safe. Each time the batter was called safe, a guy in the stands wearing a Padres hat, stood up to applaud the call and said to a rather tame Rockies crowd – “ties goes to the runner!”

Under further scrutiny:

Rule 6.05 A batter is out when: After a third strike or after he hits a fair ball, he or first base is tagged before he touches first base.

There is no such rule. You’re either safe or you’re out. There’s no tie. Just like Snufalufugus, “Tie Goes to the Runner” is just a figment of our imagination. It’s a hoax.

Rockies won 3-1.
